Our engineering and standards compliance

CE

CE Certifications are governed by a regulation that includes all European Union members and Great Britain. These regulations set safety and environmental standards for every recreational boat up to 24 metres in length, including personal watercraft and project boats undergoing repowering. The certification process includes an assessment of the boat build’s technical details and, in some cases, a physical inspection of the boat by an approved assessor. Boats are rated under one of four categories. The classification also limits how many people a boat is allowed to carry, but we’ll overlook that for this article – but be aware that the number of people on board could mean the boat’s CE Category can fall to a lower rating as a result.

Australian Boat Builders Plate

Compliance Plates Australia understands that the Australian Builders Plate (ABP) is a key feature of the safety compliance for recreational boats in Australia. It is essential that all boats comply with the requirements in order to supply a suitable compliance plate.

Information contained on an Australian Builders Plate (Boat Plate) must be calculated by the builder, importer or an competent person. A Naval Architect or Marine Surveyor can assist you in calculating the information suitable for your boat.

Individuals need to contact the builder, importer or Marine Surveyor to determine the required information for their ABP plate.

The HIN is a 15 character unique number fixed in 2 locations to the boat, one on the transom and one in a hidden location known by the manufacturer / importer.

Australian Standards

Australian Standard AS 1799.1:2009, Small craft, Part 1: General requirements for power boats, has been revised after a recent assessment found the standard was no longer current.

AS 1799.1:2009 is referenced in the Australian Builders Plate standard (ABP) which is enforced nationwide under maritime safety or consumer protection law. The ABP is an information plate attached to most power boats and includes information about the boat, such as maximum persons and load capacity, engine power and more.

An assessment of compliance to ABP standard found AS 1799.1:2009 is out of step with global industry developments, new assessment methodologies and raised concerns around interpretation.
